Is refacing worth doing?
Where the layout works and the boxes are sound it is the best value on this page. Where either is untrue it is money spent on a kitchen you will replace anyway.
Can counters be replaced on their own?
Yes, and it is a short job. The cabinets have to be level enough to template against, which occasionally adds a day before anybody measures.
How long are we without a work surface?
